I pledge to take action for deaf children in my local area

I have been contacted by local campaigner Mr Grant to ask if I and other Council Candidates will pledge our support and take action for deaf children.

There are approximately 3,500 deaf children in Scotland today and as many as 80% of all children will experience at least one episode of temporary deafness, such as glue ear, by the age of 10. Given the right support, deaf children can do anything other children can. Without the right support, deaf children are vulnerable to isolation, bullying, mental health problems, low levels of achievement and unemployment in later life.

As a candidate for Kilmarnock East & Hurlford I sign the National Deaf Children’s Society’s pledge to take action to:

1) Ensure deaf children in my ward get the same opportunities as other children.

2) Support NDCS’s campaign to make Scotland’s schools sound good.

3) Improve and protect public services so deaf children and their families get the support they need from the start.
